Harts Plumbers, Electricians, & HVAC Technicians urge homeowners to remain diligent about natural gas safety

The Pacific Northwest-based home services provider warns that natural gas concerns shouldn’t be forgotten at the end of winter

TACOMA, Wash., Feb. 18, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Harts Plumbers, Electricians & HVAC Technicians, a top-rated western Washington home services provider founded in 2013, recommends that homeowners stay diligent to natural gas safety even as winter begins winding down.

“Even though we only have a few more weeks of really cold weather, many homeowners still use natural gas for other appliances all year long,” said Richard Hart, co-owner of Harts Plumbers, Electricians & HVAC Technicians. “Natural gas can be responsible for carbon monoxide poisoning and even violent explosions. A small leak is dangerous and can make you sick. It’s important that your natural gas lines and natural gas appliances are well-maintained.”

Hart said there are a number of things homeowners can do to protect their homes from natural gas leaks.

“Replacing the air filter to their natural gas furnace regularly and checking ducts for cracks and gaps is a great place to start,” he said. “Checking the flue pipe and your external vents for obstructions that might keep deadly fumes from escaping is also a necessity.”

In addition, Hart suggests that homeowners:

  • Have their natural gas furnace and appliances regularly tested and maintained. Furnaces should be checked by a qualified technician at least once a year.
  • Install natural gas and carbon monoxide detectors on each floor of the home.
  • Do not use a natural gas oven as a heating method.
  • Have their natural gas pipes tested. Most municipalities provide this service on their underground pipes regularly, but homeowners should also have their internal lines tagged for identification and checked for damage that can cause leaks.

“Natural gas doesn’t have an odor, so vendors have added a rotten egg smell to alert people when the gas is venting into the air,” Hart said. “If you smell this odor in or around your home or feel dizzy or nauseous, leave immediately and call emergency service personnel or your utility provider to report the issue. Let the professionals handle the problem so that the situation doesn’t become volatile.”
